Leonardo DiCaprio has finally won his first Oscar for survival epic ‘The Revenant’, after four previous unsuccessful nominations. It seems, Oscar gold has previously eluded the celebrated star, who has won plenty of other honours over his two decade long career. But it was this year's portrayal of frontiersman Hugh Glass in the revenge tale The Revenant that earned him the milestone.
Kate Winslet was one of the first to congratulate the star before he took the stage to accept his award
The pair have been BFFs since filming Titanic in 1996,which rocked them to international fame and it was obvious that Leo’s win also meant a lot to Kate, who had previously admitted she was only going to the ceremony so she could see him pick up the gong. The two made sure to take in the milestone together.

The emotional 41-year-old star led the winners at the glittering 88th Academy Awards in Beverly Hills, which saw Room's Brie Larson take home Best Actress and Spotlight scooping the coveted Best Picture prize. He used his lengthy acceptance speech to deliver a lecture on climate change, and was able to speak for a longer period than other winners when the producers failed to play 'wrap-it-up' music as he went well past his allotted time of 45 seconds

'Making The Revenant was about man's relationship to the natural world...climate change is real,' said DiCaprio. 'It is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters or the big corporations but for all people.'

"I thank you all for this. Let us not take this planet for granted - I do not take tonight for granted," he capped, to rapturous applause from the evidently ecstatic crowd.
