At a point in time, I just decided it was high time I made money off my Creative Talent - CEO Deesoy Designs

By Kemi Mobuse - Wednesday, June 08, 2016

Being a designer, I have learnt can take any form, from fashion to street art and the newest which I accidentally came across; Paper Art. I actually came across one of the paper art by DeeSoy Designs, when it was featured on Bella Naija. What amazed me about the that piece of art in particular, was; the amount of attention that was given to the tiniest of details, involved in bringing the art to Life. It was so superbly crafted and was to me,just really perfect.

I only got to know that it was paper art, when I finally closed my gaping mouth, and read the Caption.  Miss Doyin Soyombo; the CEO of Deesoy Designs is a Nigerian by Birth, but currently resides in the US.That didn't stop me from finding a way to score an exclusive with her, though it took me weeks, but I got my story , *tongue out* Lol!

Excerpts from the Interview below...

KMB: Can we meet you?

Deesoy Designs: My name is Doyin Soyombo

KMB: What do you do?

Deesoy Designs: My business is called DeeSoy Designs (my first and last names combined)

KMB: What inspired your going into this field of work in particular?

Deesoy Designs: I've always been very creative, drawing, and putting things together. So I decided, "Hey, why not make money off this talent God has given me". I love creating unique things, especially with paper. I love to be different, and not follow the crowd.

KMB: What is the name of your brand and how old is it?

Deesoy Designs: Deesoy Designs. I’ve been doing it for quite some time now, but didn't officially launch until July of 2015.

KMB: How can you say the market reception has been since inception?

Deesoy Designs: It has been awesome! It got to a point where I had to turn people away because of the number of requests I get daily, even as far away as Nigeria and England. So I would say people have received it very well.

KMB: Why do you use paper in particular for your designs?

Deesoy Designs: I work better with paper and can create many different things out of it, so I use mostly paper, but I do not limit myself to only paper.

KMB: Where do you draw the inspiration for your designs?

Deesoy Designs: At museums, on the street, while taking a walk, anywhere and anything, really. I'm the type of person to really pay attention to things I see. Things that look different. And ideas just pour in.

KMB: Are your designs limited to some things in particular or does it broadly cover a lot of things?

Deesoy Designs: Ohhhk. No not limited at all. I like to challenge myself, so I pretty much make whatever the clients wants, and add my own twist to it.

KMB: How was starting out for you capital wise?

Deesoy Designs: I already had some money saved up so it really wasn't difficult to get started.

KMB: Since the inception of your brand, what major challenges have you had to deal with? How did you sort them out, more importantly what can you say they taught you?

Deesoy Designs: I haven't really faced any major challenges per say, and I can boldly say; it is because of how I run my business. I'm a very professional person and I like to do things the correct way. Each client is given a contract which states everything they need to know and do, including what will happen if that contract is breached.

I don't say, because the client is my friend, I would treat them a certain way. Everyone has to adhere to my contract, whether friend or not.

So to be honest, I haven't faced any major challenges thus far.

KMB: What words do you live by as an entrepreneur?

Deesoy Designs: "Take pride is how far you have come and have faith in how far you can go". - Words I live by.

KMB: What do you aim to achieve with your brand exactly?

Deesoy Designs: I aim to be the top paper craft artist in this part of the world. And hopefully expand to Nigeria because I get so many requests from back home.

KMB: Any advice for upcoming entrepreneurs?

Deesoy Designs: I would advice upcoming entrepreneurs NOT TO GIVE UP on their dreams. Yes, problems will arise but they have got to keep going.

KMB: Lastly, how can you be contacted?
